Fatigue is one of the most common reasons people see a GP — and one of the most dismissed. 'Tired all the time' usually has layered causes rather than one dramatic one: sleep debt, blood sugar swings, low iron or other nutrient gaps, chronic stress, under-movement and untreated conditions can stack on top of each other.

The functional approach is to systematically remove each drain while your GP rules out medical causes.

First: what to rule out with your doctor

Persistent fatigue deserves basic medical screening before lifestyle work — iron studies, thyroid function, vitamin B12 and D, blood glucose and sleep apnoea screening are common starting points your GP may consider. Unexplained fatigue with weight change, fevers or night sweats needs prompt medical review.

The five everyday energy drains

  • Sleep debt — the most common and most fixable. See our Sleep Hub.
  • Blood sugar rollercoasters — high-carb, low-protein meals create mid-afternoon crashes.
  • Chronic stress — cortisol dysregulation makes you wired at night, flat in the morning.
  • Under-movement — sedentary days reduce mitochondrial fitness; energy genuinely is 'use it or lose it'.
  • Dehydration and excess alcohol — both quietly degrade sleep quality and daytime clarity.

Rebuilding energy: order matters

The sequence we use in our programs: stabilise sleep first, then anchor each meal with protein to steady blood sugar, then add daily walking and two short strength sessions a week, then address stress load. Most people notice meaningful change in 3–4 weeks when the sequence is respected.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I tired even after 8 hours of sleep?

Duration isn't quality. Alcohol, late meals, an untreated airway problem, or high evening stress can fragment sleep you don't remember waking from. If unrefreshing sleep persists, ask your GP about sleep apnoea screening.

Do energy supplements help?

Caffeine masks fatigue rather than fixing it. If a deficiency (like iron or B12) is confirmed by testing, correcting it can be transformative — which is why we recommend testing before supplementing.

How do I know if it's burnout or something medical?

You don't have to guess — do both: see your GP for basic bloods, and honestly audit sleep, stress and workload. Our free Diagnostic Workup tool can help you prepare the right questions for your appointment.
